Semporna is a district of Tawau City, Sabah, Malaysia, located on the east coast of the state of Sabah, Malaysia. It has a population of about 167,000

Originally a small fishing village in Malaysia, Semporna is not even found on maps, but has gradually developed into a world-famous underwater tourism center.

In Bajau and Malay, Semporna literally means perfect. Surrounded by the sea, Semporna and its affiliated islands are like an island of dreams in the real world. It is a diving destination and there are many great dive bases around to learn a variety of diving lessons.
Pristine white sand, coconut palms and the calm and beautiful waters of the turquoise Sulawesi Sea gently brush the colourful reef.

Earlier, the Bajau people made boats their home, and most of them lived along the coastal coast or built houses on piles on shallow reefs, continuing their traditional custom of loving the sea as much as home. A wide range of water sports are available, such as diving, canoeing, water surfing, or visitors can travel to several famous outlying islands.

There are many large and small islands in the Semporna area, the most popular of which have hotels on the four islands:
- Pom Bang Island,
- Mataking Island
- Kapalai Island, and
- Mabul Island.

The four have their own styles and are suitable for tourists with different hobbies.

Pompang Island is petty bourgeoisie:
✔ A typical private island with pristine white sand beaches, there are two resorts on the island with beach bungalows and overwater bungalows;

Mataking Island is pristine:
✔ The large area, the island has lush vegetation, there are no water huts, only chalets with sea views and garden views, which is an excellent choice for experiencing deep diving;

Kapalai Island is romantic:
✔ It can't be said to be an island in the strict sense, it is just a sandbar, and the resort here is composed of small cabins built directly on the water, which is a honeymoon mecca sought after by couples;

Mabul Island is full of people;
✔ There are two floating resorts off the coast of Mabul Island. Half of the island is a resort, while the other half is inhabited by the original Bajau ethnic group. The life and culture of the original people combined with other beautiful coastal scenery form the unique scenery of Semporna. It is also the only island among the four islands with indigenous inhabitants, and the environment is relatively complicated!

In addition to the island, a must-do classic in Semporna is Tun Sakaran Marine Park. Tun Shakaran has 8 large and small islands, including Gaya Island, Sleeping Beauty Island, Mandabuan, Mega Island, and Gunkan Island. Except for Gunkan Island, which is garrisoned by troops, the other three islands have Bajau villages.

Featured events

Every April, Semporna holds a regatta. A variety of traditional boats are decorated with lepa and junkong and sail around town to compete for awards. This event is a festival unique to the Bajau people, and the locals call this festival "lepalepa", which is translated as the Colorful Boat Festival.
